The Future Of Solar Energy 2010 - Aggregated News
The Future Of Solar Energy 2010
This video was uploaded by Oregon State University to Youtube on July 15th, 2010. This video provides insight into solar energy. For more information about solar energy or to use this video please contact the university directly. Here is the description of the video: The global need for secure, sustainable, and clean sources of energy has never been felt more keenly, as events around the world underscore daily. From oil spreading relentlessly around the Gulf of Mexico to carbon emissions driving fundamental changes to our worldwide climate, the costs of our petroleum-fed economy climb ever higher.
The race to develop and mature
alternative energy sources
, however, is gaining speed, and among... ...the many different kinds being explored, none looms larger than solar. The idea of drawing energy from the sun isn't exactly new, but scientific advances in recent years have dramatically increased its potential as part of the mix of energy sources destined to fuel the twenty-first century. New developments increasing the amounts of energy that can be captured by solar installations and turned into usable power are transforming the way that power providers think about sun-derived energy. Some of the most significant advances are taking place here in Oregon, which is emerging as a national leader in the development and manufacture of solar power systems.
Terri S. Fiez, PhD, is head of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at
Oregon State University
. From 2008 until mid-2009 she co-founded and served as CEO of Azuray Technologies, a startup developing micro-inverters for solar applications located in Tualatin, Oregon. Since returning to OSU in September 2009, she has taken on a leadership role for OSU's Sustainable Energy and Infrastructure (SENERGI) research thrust. She has been very active professionally as a researcher in integrated circuits and innovative engineering education approaches, publishing more than 100 technical papers and advising more than 70 graduate students in her career. Dr. Fiez is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) Fellow and she was previously awarded the National Science Foundation's Young Investigator Award and the IEEE Education Activities Board Innovative Education Award. After receiving her PhD from OSU in 1990 she was a faculty member at Washington State University before returning to OSU to lead the department in 1999.
Joining Terri at this presentation and taking part in the Q&A afterward will be Wolfgang Dilson, founder/president of Akro Construction Co., and Walt Eager, both leading Corvallis voices in energy efficient buildings, solar energy, and renewable energy in general.
